Summer Shakeups and Boredom Busters for You or Your Kids

Stuck in a rut? Bored?

Try one or more of the following 10 ideas. Enjoy them alone or with your children! If you do one and post about it, please use #LifeChallenge so I and others can check them out and get inspired!

Take photos!

Go for a walk in your neighborhood and take pictures of what you see. Trees? Bugs? Park? Or, drive around town and take pictures of your stomping grounds to notice what you may not have noticed before! Or, document your day with photos…from breakfast, to chores, to any daily activity, to bedtime routine. It’s like a picture diary of your day. Google “photo challenges” for more ideas!

Practice gratitude.

Write and mail a thank you note! Everyone gets excited to have personal mail delivered. So, let someone know what you appreciate about them. Not only will you feel good about doing it, you will most likely be the highlight of the day for the receiver! Buy a card, make a card, use colorful pens, add stickers, include a photo…get creative!

Have a Should-less Day!

Actress Ellen Burstyn says, “I have what I call should-less days. Today is a day where there’s nothing I should do. So I only do what I want to do. And if it’s nap in the afternoon or watch TV and eat ice cream, I get to do it.”

Listen to a TED Talk.

There are numerous topics, and all of them are under 18 minutes. I’m addicted to TED Talks. Here are a few fun ones:

Create an origami masterpiece.

You can do this simply by watching YouTube. Start with these:

Play in the kitchen!

Cookies, dinner, dessert? Check out these websites for summer goodness on a plate: Delish or Taste of Home. Also, Brit + Co has fun ideas for kids…like chocolate-dipped and decorated frozen bananas.

Create your own cocktail or mocktail!

As my son said when he was young, “I’m going to do a science experiment.” This is what he would announce before finding items in the kitchen to mix together. So, experiment with your own ingredients to create a fun summery refreshment! What will you create?

Go Geocaching.

What is geocaching, you ask? It’s basically a world-wide treasure hunt. How cool is that?! The app I use is the original: Geocaching. This is a way to get out of the house, explore your area, and find hidden caches! Pictured below is my son and I finding our first one in July 2015. (To learn about his odd haircut, click here).
