What’s the Point?

Thoughts and Ideas for the Mentally Struggling and Mentally Successful

When I first began therapy for my mental illness, I couldn’t even put a name to any of my feelings. It was as though I was having them all at once or not at all.

Overwhelmed by emotions…or just no feeling at all.

Not apathy, just…nothing.

I was detached from life.

I didn’t see the point.

I’d ask myself: 

  • Are we just some big play-thing for some giant in the sky?
  • Just a community on a speck in the universe for a giant Horton to stumble across?
  • Who decides what’s important in our society?
  • Why is there so much hatred and destruction in this world?

I’d start catastrophizing.

We’re all survivors in life, yet what are we surviving for?

What’s the big picture, or is there even one to be seen?

How is it decided who feels loved or who is isolated, who has the opportunity for a job or education, who gets to live on the streets, who gets health, who must suffer chronic or life-threatening conditions, who must battle the want to die?

Why would a god put someone in that position…the position to just live miserably and then die? What’s the point in that?

Not everyone is a survivor of heartache, mental illness, physical illness, and such. People are born into misery, live in misery, and die in misery every day.

So, what is the point?

I’ve struggled with this quandary. It took me quite a long time to figure out that we’re all here through no fault of our own.

We’re all here surviving in life. So, since we’re all here, we might as well make the best of it by doing what we can for our own sake and for the sake of others.

Why suffer or cause suffering more than necessary?

What can we do for one another? …in our own families …in our communities …for our neighbors …for our co-workers …for our friends …for the unwanted …for the suffering …for the forgotten?

That’s the worst…the ones not easily thought of. Those alone and forgotten.

Below are ways to make a difference. 

Many you may be hearing of for the first time. Others, you may have heard before yet never delivered on. Make it your mission to do good.

Check out these easy-to-be-a-part-of programs:

The Peyton Heart Project (global project created to help end suicide and bullying and the stigma surrounding mental health issues)

Cards for Hospitalized Kids and those with Life-threatening Illnesses

Soldiers’ Angels (programs to directly support homeless, low income, or at-risk veterans and their families)

Love for the Elderly (providing the lonely elderly with the love and appreciation they deserve)

Amazon Smile (Amazon will donate to your favorite nonprofit each time you make a purchase)

More Love Letters (Write and mail letters to strangers all over the world. You can nominate someone in need and/or be a letter writer.)

One Simple Wish (Spread love, hope and joy to children impacted by foster care, abuse and neglect.)

Librivox (Assist in making audio books available to anyone who wants them. This site helps you find books in the public domain that you can read aloud, record, and make accessible.)

Put these simple, yet powerful, everyday activities in action:

  • Call or text to check on a friend.
  • When it’s summer and hot, give out cold drinks to your mail carrier and trash collectors. When it’s cold outside, offer hot chocolate to crossing guards, police officers, and others.
  • Send a silly letter or postcard to make someone laugh (to a child, friend, relative)
  • When people are gossiping about someone, be the one to chime in with something nice. Recognize the good in others.
  • Give someone the benefit of the doubt.
  • Everyone is important. Learn the names of people you see every day. Greet them by name.
  • Distribute anonymous, random notes of encouragement (on car windows, on desks at work, neighbors’ front doors)
  • Spread encouragement online…make social media a positive experience.
  • Smile at people. It’s contagious.
  • Say “thank you” often.
  • Talk to someone at work whom you have’t talked to before.
  • Give someone a hug.
  • Put your phone away, take your earbuds out, and be fully part of life around you.
  • Empathize.

As Prince beautifully put it:

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life.

The upshot: Let’s get through this life lovingly and graciously. Let that be our purpose for our moment on earth.
